Ellen D. Durnin, Ph.D. brings over 30 years of experience in higher education to her position as Dean of the School of Business at Southern Connecticut State University, where she has served since 2010, except for an eighteen-month stint as Interim Provost for 2016 and 2017.
As dean, Durnin is leading her School’s committee to construct a new, 60,000 square foot building for Business; it will be the first “net zero” space constructed by the State of Connecticut. Additionally, Durnin has created a professional development seminar series for students in collaboration with area employers, oversaw the creation of a program in Public Utilities Management to prepare the industry’s future leaders, and has implemented a new women’s leadership program for Business students.
Other accomplishments include: acquisition of new Business faculty lines and other resources; fundraising to support student activities and faculty research, the creation of the Business Success Center for student internships and professional development activities; leadership of the School’s successful application and initial Self-Evaluation Report leading to the candidacy stage for AACSB accreditation; the development of an engaged Business Advisory Council; and active involvement in the business and non-profit communities.
Dr. Durnin sits on the Board of Directors of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Director’s for Chapel Haven’s Schleifer Center, and the Vista Life Innovations Economic Development Committee. She developed the Business School’s first international partnership with ESPEME University in France, allowing Southern business students to study abroad in a global community. Dr. Durnin was named the Business Community Advocate of the Year by the Hamden Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2013, and the Leadership Center’s 2019 honoree by the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce.
Durnin holds a Ph.D. in Business from the City University of New York Graduate Center. Her teaching and research focus on the areas of human resource management, negotiations and conflict resolution, and work/family balance. Additionally, Dr. Durnin provides training and consultation to organizations in these areas.
