Servant Leadership and COVID-19: A “People-First” Approach to Navigating a Medical Organization

Dr. Mackenzie speaks with Bryan Kelly, MD, MBA, Surgeon-in-Chief, and Steve Forti, RN, Chief of Staff, Crisis Management, about the importance of servant leadership, the act of putting people first and helping them to develop and perform as highly as possible, while leading the nation’s #1 hospital in orthopaedics during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Kelly is an attending orthopaedic surgeon and Mr. Forti is a U.S. Army Special Forces Master Sergeant and Registered Nurse.

Transitioning an Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital to Triaging and Managing a Critical Care Population

David Mayman, MD, and Jennifer O’Neill, DNP, APN, NEA-BC discuss what it was like to transform HSS, a specialty hospital, into a critical care facility in less than two weeks’ time when COVID-19 cases quickly spiked in New York City. Serving as Chief Medical Officer and Chief Operating Officer, respectively, of NYP+@HSS, they led the implementation of HSS surge capacity in support of New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Maintaining a GME Training Program During a Pandemic: Institutional Response

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on graduate medical education programs across the country has been tremendous. HSS runs a large ACGME-accredited orthopaedic residency program, as well as 20 musculoskeletal fellowships. Training leaders in orthopaedics and rheumatology during a time of crisis offered an exceptional experience for residents and fellows to activate and serve on the front lines of critical patient care.
